Søuld
Søuld is an innovative circular material made out of eelgrass.
The certified B-corp company creates acoustic mats and boards that are specially designed for ceiling and wall solutions. Eelgrass is a commonly overlooked material, but Søuld has utilised this carbon-storing material to provide a healthy indoor environment.
Production process
The eelgrass is sourced locally and sustainably by farmers in Denmark. It is analyzed, sorted and classified in the production facility and then shredded down to shorter standardized fibres. The shredded fibres are then impregnated with a natural, non-toxic flame retardant and mixed with a binder especially designed for cellulose fibres and recyclability. The blended fibres are formed into eelgrass batts using airlaid technology.
The fibres are then compressed into mats by a process which balances a low temperature with high compression. The mats are then cut at standard or customizable sizes and are ready to be installed.

Søuld’s products are made of eelgrass and a biocomponent binder.
The materials are highly resistant to fire, contain no toxic chemicals, release extremely low emissions and reduce carbon footprint by serving as a CO₂ sink over the building’s lifetime.
The material guarantees restful acoustics, thermal comfort, and air humidity stabilization, along with an appealing aesthetic expression.
The material is resilient yet soft to the touch—imparting texture, warmth, and a subtle scent that recalls the sea.
With their simple, modern aesthetics, Søuld’s products are proportioned for easy interior application and are fully customizable to suit residential and commercial spaces of all natures and scales. They are convenient and fast to install, and their superior quality provides lasting comfort.
Søuld’s framed acoustic mats are held within custom natural wooden frames with bevelled edges, bringing additional craftsmanship and tactility to the eelgrass material.

Circular features
Eelgrass is a non-toxic, recyclable and CO2-storing material which is found in abundance in Denmark. Søuld’s work has further encouraged the protection and revitalization of the eelgrass ecosystem. It proves to be a sustainable alternative to traditional building materials in the construction industry.
The mats and boards are Gold Certified and Material Health Platinum assured regarding Cradle to Cradle.

Afterlife Plan
- At the end of life, they can be returned to the factory, re-shredded and either blended into standard products or used to create a base for second-generation Søuld materials.
- The products that are not returned can be sent for combustion at heating plants.
