  • Additional Information

Shikada Woven is a material woven from sustainably sourced, traditionally Japanese, and 100% natural bamboo and made into products by an expert, artisanal craftsmanship.

Production process

Shikada Sangyo converts round bamboo with a diameter of approximately 10 cm into thin strips of bamboo with a diameter of approx 1.2 mm to 12 mm. In Japan, the material made by weaving these thin strips of bamboo together is called sudare. Sudare is produced and stocked in rolls with a maximum width of 2.4 m and a maximum length of 40 m.

Shikada Sangyo makes the woven material in two ways: traditionally by manually pressing each thin bamboo strip using a foot loom to match the sizes of each bamboo node (Manyo) or transformed into a standard material in which thin bamboo strips and flat bamboo strips are woven together using a power loom that can make a material with a width of up to 2.4 m (Shikisai).

When both methods are combined, customers can choose from a range of approximately 40 types of sudare materials.

Material properties

Shikada Woven can be ordered in rolls of up to 40 m or custom sizes cut in 1 cm units from each roll. A special Japanese cutter is used to cut pieces from the maximum dimensions possible for each manufacturing method (depending on the type) to the desired width and length.

Despite being rigid and durable, bamboo can be used to create soft and supple shapes. It is also flexible enough to be suspended, bent and twisted into various designs.

It can be used to create dynamic and elegant spaces as it allows air and light to pass through (optical transparency).

As the material is natural bamboo, its colour and texture will change to an appealing glossy or candy type in about 20 years.

Shikada Sangyo has a lineup of flame-resistant materials certified as per regulations in the EU and France.

The material is used to make different kinds of shades, screens, blinds and decorative spaces suited for both Western (Shikisai) and Japanese (Manyo) settings.
