MyCO BRICKS
MyCO BRICKS, by Superpraxis studio in Argentina, are bricks made from mycelium and local agricultural waste.
The bricks utilise mycelium from the edible mushroom Ganoderma Lucidum (Reishi) and are combined with the waste from local beer production and the local wood industry.
The bricks utilise mycelium’s amazing ability to grow into desired shapes and are here moulded into building bricks that are both safe and healthy.
The dimensions of the bricks are: 3.9 x 3.9 x 7.9 inches:
About Mycelium
Mycelium consists of microscopic filaments called hyphae that expand in the form of a rhizomatic network, feeding on inert matter, agglomerating organic waste and generating a structure with high compressive strength characteristics. Concurrently, Mycelium is characterized by its particular lightness, its fireproof and thermoacoustic properties and its buoyancy in water due to its porosity.
Material Properties
The MyCO BRICKS are an excellent alternative to conventional building materials as they offer a wide range of properties.
Biodegradable
As the bricks are a combination of mycelium and organic waste, the bricks are fully biodegradable and compostable. Consequently, the material can be reinserted into the natural environment as fertilizer once it has fulfilled its building function. This circular reasoning ensures the material’s return to the earth to nourish new life.
Thermal Capacity
Materials made with mycelium are highly effective thermal insulating products. They outperform most of the natural alternatives currently available and maintain their insulative properties throughout their life.
.
Fire Performance
MyCO bricks have excellent fire performance as Mycelium releases significantly less heat and smoke during burning, while having much lower average and peak heat release rates. When exposed to fire, it takes longer to flash due to its charring behaviour.
Durability
MyCo bricks are durable with inherently high compressive strength characteristics.
Buildability
The MyCO bricks are easily installed and do not require training or additional safety equipment.
