Fishy Filaments

  • Product Details
  • Additional Information

Fishy Filaments are 3D printer filaments and pellets made from waste fishing nets.

The innovative process takes end-of-life monofilament fishing nets and converts them into an ultra-low carbon supply of engineering-grade Nylon 6, which is then used as filaments and pellets.

Production process

By embedding within local fishing communities, Fishy Filaments collects the nets and manually grades them before recycling. It ensures consistent and optimum product quality, and for the same reason, found marine plastics are not used.

The graded nets are then finally transformed into clean, ready-to-use micropellet using Fishy Filaments’ patent-pending hardware and Probabilistic Shaped Particle Cleaning® process.

Fishy Filaments also works with partners to deliver value-added raw materials like 3D printer filaments.

Material properties

All the pellets and filaments are made from 100% recycled (marine) nylon 6, originating from used fishing nets.

Currently, there are three bulk raw pellet products available:

Porthcurno for homeware, fashion and other aesthetic products owing to its attractive translucent blue-green colour.

Longships as a base material in higher volume applications.

Finally, OrCA® for engineering applications, including carbon allotropes like graphene or carbon fibres.

Circular features

Fishy Filaments transform end-of-life waste into an asset using only power and water, sans toxic additives. The diversion of this waste also avoids a dire environmental impact on marine ecosystems. Through engaging with local fishing communities, the supply chain is assuredly transparent with minimal logistical challenges.

The circular materials are equipped with quantitative carbon lifecycle assessment and technical and safety data sheets. Fishy Filaments works with businesses seeking to develop low-carbon or closed-loop products, and they always keep an eye on the Scope 3 emissions of their supply chain.

The production process is efficient and scalable enough to work as a standalone plant, even in off-grid locations. The propriety hardware is also designed to fit in a deployable 40ft shipping container.

The company offers take-back with the materials capable of being recycled in the existing production process.
