Effekt Footware
Effekt manufactures footwear (focused on sneakers) made from reclaimed, repurposed and recycled material.
Production process
Effekt Footwear is handcrafted in Portugal from 90% locally sourced resources, diverted from going to waste.
The Effekt Alchemy-X version 2 (AX:V2) is the ongoing sneaker model. It is almost entirely made from recycled material. The moulded cup sole is a fusion of fresh and residual rubber collected directly from the factory floor. The upper-ocean plastic reclaimed from the Mediterranean - is spun and woven into a canvas-like fabric. and the recycled cotton lining is derived from textile waste.
Material properties
The materials used are locally sourced from waste that may most probably end up in the ocean.
The sneakers have the following anatomy:
- Ocean plastic upper,
- Recycled textile lining
- Reclaimed rubber sole.
Their style is of the minimalist aesthetic.
The Effekt Alchemy-X version 2 (AX:V2) is a continuation of the Alchemy-X - Effekt’s first sneaker created from repurposed material.
Circular features
In 2021, the Alchemy-X was awarded the Global Footwear Awards prize for Recycled Materials/Closed Loop Manufacturing in the Sustainability category.
To eliminate post-consumer waste, Effekt has a strong return policy. The manufacturing factory is close to the source of materials and also maintains high labour standards.
Going one step further, Effekt pledges a percentage of each sale to social and environmental causes.
Teaming up with Unfold Consulting, Effekt will soon produce an in-depth Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study. Due to their material selection, close supply chain and Portuguese production, it is expected that the AX:V2 will have a carbon footprint that rivals the lowest-impact sneakers currently on the market.
