Cotton - Organic GOTS Certified 2
It is a type of organic cotton that has received Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification, which attests that the cotton is sustainable in all aspects, unlike a lot of regular cotton.
Production process
The cotton is grown, harvested & processed without using any hazardous chemicals, toxic bleach, or formaldehyde. Unlike other organic cotton, GOTS organic cotton is a bit different, as once the organic cotton is grown, the entire chain of custody from harvest to finished product is certified.
Material properties
The cotton is organic & GMO-free. It consists of no harmful chemicals that may damage health or the environment. Low-impact fibre dyes or natural dyes are used for the cotton, while oxygen-based bleach is used for whitening.
Circular features
It is ensured that toxic chemicals, chlorine bleach, or other seriously damaging finishes like formaldehyde are not used at any stage. Another benefit of GOTS certification is that it includes strict requirements for fair wages and treatment of workers and allows for traceability to the source.
Organic cotton vs traditional cotton
Cotton is mostly biodegradable in its pure form. It's the perfect choice for lightweight applications thanks to the fibres’ unique properties, such as durability, softness and breathability.
However, its production comes with challenges around inefficient water usage, huge amounts of overproduction, toxic pesticide use, social distress, labour conditions and traceability.
On the other hand, organic cotton, including GOTS-certified cotton, uplifts the standards of production focusing on the main pillars of society i.e. economic, environmental and social sustainability.
Unlike traditional cotton, organic one does not utilize synthetic chemicals & GMOs & instead looks after the soil ecosystem & the farmer’s well-being. It undergoes strict assessments, for which it is certified as well.
Despite everything, both organic & traditional cotton face similar hurdles when it comes to water usage & traceability, which may hide unfair labour conditions. But with the coming of stricter laws & investments in new technology, the horizon looks better for organic cotton.
