Clean Skins – Sail Range

Zipper Free Surfboard Covers made from used sails

Designed with the intent to eliminate waste, the sail range of board covers embraces circular principles by utilising local waste streams to provide local solutions.

The range of surfboard covers designed for Clean Generation is made from local sourced used sailing boat sails.

Through innovation, the covers provide a second life to a valuable material that was destined for landfill.

The unique and beautiful feature of the sail range embraces the worn state of the material. Each cover is unique, worn and coloured and showcases unique qualities of a waste material. Each design is different and taps into the innovative design of the Clean cover to provide a second life.

The folding board cover, has been designed to eliminate waste through innovation. The unique design eliminates the need for a zipper which is the fail point of most board covers. The simple and unique design relies on folds and clips to in turn create a safe and protected cover for your board.

The Sail range utilises the innovative design of the folding cover combines with a waste stream of the local area.

Challenges

The biggest challenge with utilising a waste resource is the ability to take a worn, coloured and used material and find a way to create a high quality product suitable for application and durability in it’s second life.

The design needs to embrace the first life of the material as a badge of honour.

The results

Located on the east coast of Australia, sailing is a common sport that discards large quantities of used sails. The sails can be in use for anywhere up to 20 years and weigh around 30-50kg each. Sailcloth as a material is durable, salt resistant and reinforced making it a suitable for board covers. The size of sails vary greatly, but 4-5 board covers can be made from most sails which in turn eliminates a large amount of material being sent directly to landfill.

Each board cover made from used sails eliminates the need for virgin material, combined with the folding cover design hopefully last 3 times longer than traditional covers on the market.

The aim is that each sail cover eliminates 3 board covers worth of raw materials each.
